Although far from a homogeneous entity, the Chinese Communist Party owns and controls key sectors of the country's economy, and its ties with Huawei are a strong indication it considers the telco 'one of its own'.

James Doherty,

Good article (The other side of Huawei, April 2).
I suppose you can't blame Alexander Downer and the other board members from Huawei Australia trying to abide by their fiduciary obligations.
But you also can't blame ASIO and Julia Gillard for having concerns about the emerging Chinese dragon, especially when those concerns mirror those expressed by the US, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India. Russia is shrewdly sitting on the fence, for now.
Let's encourage commerce and investment with Communist (yes, let's also call a spade a spade) China, but do so with both eyes open towards serving Australian and Pacific Rim strategic interests.
