CLIMATE SPECTATOR: Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change

Tony Abbott's latest Coalition policy statement remains short on climate policy detail, and his Business Advisory Council chair is a noted anti-wind farm advocate and climate change sceptic.

Adam Young,

Got to agree with Newman here! Indeed, wind farms are grossly inefficient, extremely expensive, socially inequitable, a danger to human health, environmentally harmful, divisive for communities, a blot on the landscape, and don’t even achieve the purpose for which they were designed, namely the reliable generation of electricity and the reduction of CO2 emissions (CLIMATE SPECTATOR: Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change, January 29).
How eloquent, I would have just said they are expensive, ugly, no good for the environment (they kill birds and make humans sick) and they dont work to provide reliable safe, and cheap baseload electricity. Yes the wind is free - the electricity sourced from it is not.
Thanks Tristan, I look forward to what else Mr Newman has to offer.

F Mogg,

Half of Australia could run on tidal movements (especiaaly in the north) due to large changes at each tide // is always there and could be used as base load (CLIMATE SPECTATOR: Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change, January 29).

Bernard Walsh,

Adam Young: wind turbines only make people sick through the agency of stress & concern engendered by anti-wind farm activists, who feed the uninformed a pack of lies (CLIMATE SPECTATOR: Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change, January 29).
I agree that they are expensive, though, especially if you do the capacity over-build required to provide reliable baseload electricity (which is possible with wind - for a price!).

Graham Plowman,

In a few year's time, we are going to look back at the present climate debate and conclude that this was a period of ideologically and politically driven insanity (CLIMATE SPECTATOR: Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change, January 29).
We need people like Abbott and Newman to get us out of this mess and get us back to where we should be.

Recommend the above - the science is compelling (Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change, January 29.)

Kate Minassian,

Well Tristan, this article was a real waste of space wasn't it (CLIMATE SPECTATOR: Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change, January 29). The Coalition has been clear in detailing the Direct Action Plan to help clean up our own environment and reduce emissions. Direct Action sets clear targets with straight forward budgets. It provides incentives for firms to reduce their carbon emissions rather than punishment for production.

Trevor Ridgway,

Very eloquently put Mr Maurice Newman !
I wish I could have used those words myself ! (CLIMATE SPECTATOR: Abbott's adviser doubts the winds of climate change, January 29.)
Of course I can't because comments are necessarily somewhat constrained and it is hard to outline one's position before all the allocation of words is exceeded.
I also liked the comments from Adam Young , Graham Plowman and F Mogg and the reluctant concession by Bernard Walsh that wind-powered-turbines deliver EXPENSIVE electricity.
I think we all want a better , cleaner , healthier environment but we can't afford to destroy our industry on the basis that CO2 emissions MAY be detrimental.
This , especially in the light of new evidence indicating that global warming may well have plateaued for the past 16 years despite claims of CO2 levels rising slightly. This breaks the link between CO2 rises causing temperature rises.
Australia's CO2 emissions are so small that we contribute almost nothing to the world total and it is not going to be a real problem if we hold off for a while to evaluate what , if any , effect CO2 is having.
The 'natural variation' in the carbon cycle far outweighs any contribution we may make and indeed calls into doubt any contribution that mankind has made to CO2 levels.
I think that time will prove that 'global warming' is a natural , cyclical process and that man's influence has been greatly exaggerated if not deliberately distorted.
