$A value climbs on iPod index

Abstracted from The Australian Financial Review

Australian stockbroker CommSec maintains an "iPod index" to gauge the strength of currencies across 60 countries. It is based on the relative cost of buying one of Apple's iconic music players, and shows in mid-2008 that Australia is now only the 14th-most affordable place to purchase an iPod, a fall by six places for the quarter. CommSec argues that a combination of a stronger Australian currency and cheaper offers elsewhere mean the iPod is becoming more expensive domestically, but that this trend will be short-lived. In fact retailers may soon pass on cheaper import savings to consumers
