Alchemia Ltd has been granted a patent in China for its fondaparinux process,

Fondaparinux is a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline’s Arixtra, a synthetic anticoagulant mainly used for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis.

Alchemia VP for intellectual property & technology transfer Mike West says China has a rapidly developing market for pharmaceuticals, and the addition of patent protection will greatly assist the company’s partnering efforts in the territory.

The company already has fondaparinux patents in Australia and the US, and applications pending in Europe, Japan and the US. “Whilst most attention is focussed on the pending approval for the US market, we are actively seeking to maximise the total value of generic fondaparinux through partnerships in other territories,” Dr West said.
