You don't have to be a roads scholar to work out that if Bob Brown has the balance of power in the senate then the present Labor Government if re-elected will do a deal with them to push through legislation to introduce this mining tax. Brown wants the increased tax collected to promote his agenda. The mining industry could very well end up paying a lot more tax than they think after the election.

Mr Forrest is welcome to his political views but as a Fortescue shareholder I would hate to see "my" money wasted on politics based anti-tax ads at this time (See Fortescue may resume tax ads, July 22).
I'm afraid Mr. Forrest and I seem to have different views on the behaviour of the species politician.
The tax was proposed by a Labor government and thus opposed by the Liberals. That doesn't really mean the Liberals don't agree with the tax, just that they are opposing the Labor government.
The big miners have negotiated what they say is a reasonable outcome. Should the Liberals win the election I would be astounded if the Liberals didn't introduce a tax similar to what has been agreed. To be sure, it would be called something else, so it will be claimed that it isn't what it is – but I'm confident it will happen.
Thus, unless I'm totally wrong and Mr Forrest's faith in a class of people known for deviousness and failure to deliver compliance with prior promises is greater than mine, any money spent on ads now will only be wasted. He should save the company's money for the fight to come after the election – with whichever party achieves power.

This mining tax has just got too far out of hand (See Fortescue may resume tax ads, July 22).
Those who believe the Labour rhetoric think it is great to give the mining industry a great big whack with this tax. But with their naive understanding of the tax, they do not realise the true damage it can do.
The Gillard government is only interested in getting re-elected for another term. But the true danger is the Greens Party, which is totally uncompromising and appears to live on another planet. If Labor does a deal with the Greens that give them control of the senate, the mining industry and this country will be damaged for decades to come.
