Patchy signal sparks digital radio revolt
Abstracted from The Australian
TOP News
The commercial radio stations sector in Australia is concerned about technical issues in the roll-out of new digital services. The Channel 9A band is to be used for the transmissions from 1 January 2009, and each station can have as many as three digital services on this part of the spectrum. However, leaked data from the Australian Communications & Media Authority and the industry body Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) suggest that due to possible interference with the Nine and Ten free-to-air TV networks, as many as half of all residents in Sydney will not be able to receive digital radio, or only outdoors. Joan Warner, head of the CRA, notes the information is not up to date, and apart from Brisbane, all capital cities should have good coverage when the system is switched on
