Yahoo, Google ad deal near

Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO -- Yahoo Inc could announce within a week a deal with Google Inc in which Yahoo's web search results would carry Google advertising, a source confirmed to Reuters.

As Yahoo seeks to fend off a hostile takeover bid by Microsoft Corp, Yahoo and Google are discussing a non-exclusive deal they believe could pass antitrust scrutiny, a separate source who is familiar with Google's thinking said.

Microsoft is considering turning its unsolicited bid into a hostile takeover offer, while Yahoo has argued for months that it is worth more than Microsoft has bid. The software company's cash-and-stock offer was worth $US44.6 billion when announced at the beginning of February.

The partnership deal with Google would entail Yahoo using Google's advertising system to sell ads alongside web search results that Yahoo serves up to its users, the companies had said at the beginning of a two-week test in April.

The timing of a potential Yahoo-Google search ad deal was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
