Using Business Spectator
Home Page
The News: Stories from Australia and the world are published throughout the day and night as news happens. They are presented in order of importance and carry the publication time and date of each article. You can click anywhere on a story headline or precede to read the full article. Click your refresh button at any time to ensure you are viewing the latest home page.
The Spectators: This is Business Spectator's commentary section, spearheaded by three of Australia's most respected business commentators -- Alan Kohler, Robert Gottliebsen and Stephen Bartholomeusz (the 'KGB'). Supported by commentary from a wide range of other specialists, analysis is published in real time, as news breaks. Click anywhere on a story headline or precede to read the full article, or go to the Spectators home page to view all recent commentary articles.
Wheels & Deals: Mergers, acquisitions, deals, market rumour and speculation and investment banking -- this is where it gets reported. Stories are added and updated throughout the day. The most important and topical items are displayed on the home page, and you can view 24 hours of stories by clicking through to the Wheels & Deals home page.
The Conversation: Combines the best of a letters-to-the-editor page, a blog, an online forum and a roundtable discussion. This is where Australia's business community can exchange views, react to the news and set agendas. The Conversation is updated throughout the day as contributions roll in. Comments are submitted for publication by filling in the form which appears at the bottom of many Business Spectator articles and on The Conversation home page.
Filters
There are 28 “filter” buttons displayed down the left side of the home page (and every other Business Spectator page) to enable you to customise the website to your specific requirements. That's because every Business Spectator story is tagged by industry or category, and by the companies and the people mentioned in it.
Click on any industry or category button down the left side and the entire site changes to display only the articles in the industry or category selected, listed in order of importance and by time of listing. There are 21 industry buttons (covering all major industries) and a further seven category buttons (climate change; politics and IR; economy; financial markets; appointments; shareholder notices; directors' dealings).
Click on “Today’s Companies” and a list of the companies covered in Business Spectator over the past 24 hours will appear; select the company you want, click on it and all stories about that company published over the past 24 hours will be listed. Click on "Today's People" and you will be able to view stories about people which have appeared in the past 24 hours.
By clicking on "Your Watchlist" you can pre-register the companies you are interested in; then whenever you visit the site you can click on the same button to view stories mentioning the companies on your watchlist that have been published in the past 24 hours (or earlier).
At the top of these “filter views” you can see two other buttons: “This week’s stories” and “All stories by date”. If you click on "This week’s stories” you are presented with a week’s stories on the subject you have chosen, and if you click on “All stories by date” you can view everything published in Business Spectator on that subject.
Search
The best way to find stories from our archive is by using the search function located at the top right corner of the home page and all other pages. This searches the entire text of all articles in our archive. Using this search facility produces a list of all published articles that match your search, listed on the right hand side of the results page. And in the middle is an advanced search form to allow you to narrow the search further. If you want to go straight to advanced search, just click the “Go” button.
Related Articles
At the end of every story are links that enable you to view all the day’s articles from related industry sectors, as well as any other stories published on the companies and people mentioned in the story you’ve read.
Email Alerts
To allow you to keep up with the news that matters in your world, we have created a highly customised ‘’news alert’’ service. Click on the ‘’Manage News Alerts’’ button on the left side of the home page and all other pages, select the companies or industries you are interested in, tell us when you would like your daily or weekly alert sent to you, and we’ll email you summaries and links to any relevant stories on our site. You can change your preferences whenever you want.
