Fortescue Metals Group Ltd chairman Andrew Forrest and his wife Nicola have pledged half their wealth to charity, according to media reports.
The couple have become the first Australians to join 105 billionaires around the world in a 'giving pledge' started by famed investor Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
According to The Australian, Mr Forrest's stake in Fortescue is worth over $5 billion, making his pledge worth at least $2.5 billion.
The Forrests are one of 12 new families to join the program, along with Virgin founder Richard Branson and his wife Joan.
The couple said that giving responsibly was even more satisfying than creating a business enterprise, according to The Australian.
"For us, giving time and money has been incredibly demanding, only possible with the love and support of our family and the latitude of our friends," they said in a letter.
