Former prime minister Kevin Rudd has distanced himself from a failed leadership coup in a letter he's penned to his local Labor branch members.
The letter was sent to 800 ALP members in Griffith, and he urges them to support Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the Courier Mail reports.
Mr Rudd warns it will be a battle to retain his seat, although with its 8.5 per cent margin it Is Labor's safest electorate in Queensland.
He said the events of last week "were not of my choosing".
Mr Rudd also defended the decision not to challenge Ms Gillard in the spill.
"The real task ahead is to hold Griffith for the Labor Party and to prevent Tony Abbott from walking into the Lodge on September 15," Mr Rudd said in the letter.
"That will require all of our energies locally and nationally."
