Prime Minister Julia Gillard insists she is meeting lots of people in western Sydney but won't say whether she'll take to the streets and shopping centres to meet more voters.
Ms Gillard has been in western Sydney since Sunday but her contact with the public has been limited to stage-managed media events.
The prime minister, though, insists the people she meets are free to say whatever is on their mind, even with the television cameras rolling.
"I met a lot of people yesterday ... who are doing incredibly impressive things, like devoting their lives to helping Australians with disability," she told ABC TV, adding she had also met with representatives of local councils.
"I met people just as I was coming and going."
Ms Gillard is heading to Melbourne on Tuesday for the state funeral of former House of Representatives speaker Joan Child.
Following the service she will return to western Sydney.
