Rio Tinto Company Profile
Rio Tinto
ASX:RIO
Resources & Energy, Mining
Rio Tinto is one of the world’s largest mining and exploration companies, with production mainly in Australia and North America. The company is dual-listed in Australia and the UK has more than 100,000 employees in more than 50 countries. Rio Tinto produces aluminium, copper, diamonds, coal, iron ore, uranium, gold and industrial minerals (borates, titanium dioxide, salt, talc). The British-based company was formed in 1873 to mine copper in Spain and the Consolidated Zinc Corporation was incorporated in 1905 to treat zinc-bearing mine waste at Broken Hill in NSW, Australia. The Rio-Tinto Zinc Corporation (RTZ) was formed in 1962 when the companies merged and CRA Limited was formed at the same time from the Australian interests of the two. They were then unified in December 1995 and operate as a single entity despite maintaining separate shareholder lists. In 1997, RTZ became Rio Tinto plc and CRA became Rio Tinto Limited to be known as the Rio Tinto Group.
